  Frequently Asked Questions

What is malnutrition?

Many people assume that malnutrition automatically means not getting enough food. Malnutrition is often associated with underdeveloped countries where food shortages are predominant. While this is indirectly true, malnutrition refers to the failure to achieve nutrient requirements. This can, indeed, result from too little food. However, at the same time, a person who is overweight and seems to be getting more than enough food might also suffer from malnutrition. In this case, the malnutrition entails the imbalance of key nutrients and is triggered by imbalanced diets.

Every time I go on a diet and exercise I don’t lose weight – Why is that?

This is a very common problem and many obese people complain about the same disappointment once they start a diet and assume that their metabolism is just not as good. However, it has been proven again and again, that most obese people unintentionally misjudge either their level of activity or the caloric food intake. While very few cases of overweight and obese people can be blamed on genetics, most abnormalities in thermogenesis can be related to a misperception in calorie intake, exercise, or both.

Why is drinking milk important?

Milk is the number one provider of calcium. Especially for children it is recommended to drink 2-3 glasses of milk daily in order to provide the required amount of calcium for a proper and healthy growing of the bones.

How many calories does alcohol have?

12 oz beer = 150 calories
12 oz (light) beer = 110 calories
5 oz wine = 90 calories
1 1/2 oz liquor = 90 calories (with 6 oz carbonated drink mix add another 75 calories)

How much coffee is too much?

Generally, it is advisable not to drink more than 3 cups of coffee each day (the same with tea). Many people have fallen into the habit of drinking more than 3 cups of coffee, especially when they are at work, where coffee is either readily available or routinely brought from home and drunk throughout the day. For those people, it is important not to cut out coffee “cold turkey” because a caffeine withdrawal will occur. Slowly reduce the amount of coffee you drink throughout the day and anything that exceeds 3 cups should be replaced by decaffeinated coffee or tea.
